Overview

Accounting is often perceived synonymous to the word “Boring”. I admit, that statement has some truth to it. In my trivial six years of studying Accounting, I have rarely witnessed students who understand the subject.

“Why is the income statement formatted like this?”

“I don’t know, that’s just how it is.”

— a common exchange of dialogue.

And I do not blame them. Why would someone go through the pain of understanding something if they could get away with memorizing it in a fraction of the time?

Prior to 2016, most A-Level Accounting exams would be comprised of 90% Math and 10% theory, which meant all you had to do was memorize formats and crunch numbers. In 2016, Cambridge changed the A Level Accounting syllabus, after which there was a 50-50 mix between theory and math. Now, candidates couldn’t get away without actually Understanding Accounting.

Unfortunately, most of my classmates were still relying on the obsolete method; memorizing formats and entries. That’s when I thought to myself, there must be a better way...

In this book, I share with you a new way of studying accounting. This method helped me achieve the highest mark in my country; Bangladesh, for two consecutive years. It focuses on truly Understanding Accounting: Why formats are the way they are, why certain transactions require a debit while others require a credit, and finally, how to use numbers to advise companies on making decisions.

Within each chapter, there are worked examples structured similarly to CIE questions, so that you not only understand the concepts, but also learn how to implement them to solve problems. At the end of each chapter, I have curated a list of questions which will help you master the material. I recommend reading the chapter first, solving worked examples as you do so, and practice the questions at the very end to scrutinize your understanding.

I strongly believe that memorizing can only take you so far and no more. But when you truly understand the underlying concepts, you will genuinely have fun with Accounting. And unlike me, you do not have to Google hundreds of articles, read multiple textbooks and watch YouTube videos from CPA’s, I have done that bit for you. All you need to do is go through the 200+ pages that follow, and trust me, you will regret calling Accounting “boring”.

This method has yielded tremendous results for me, and I hope it will do the same for you. If you want to achieve the same, if not better results than I have, this is the best 500 Taka investment you can make!

Never had accounting, but when I had to study for my accounting course in university, this book was like a saving grace given that I had to learn accounting from scratch. Concepts are very clearly articulated.

I have personally read the book and coming from a science background, I understood the concepts very easily. This shows how anyone can understand accounting by just reading this book. I have personally recommended this book to other people I know who have
